Hospital’s Palliative Care Center Names New Manager

New Britain [January 20 2006] - Cynthia Kociszewski, APRN, Ph.D., has been named manager of the Wolfson Palliative Care Program at New Britain General Hospital.

“Cindy is a natural choice for this position” said Dr. Stephen Grund, director of the George Bray Cancer Center and the Wolfson Palliative Care Program. “She has worked as an APRN in the ICU and possesses tremendous clinical skills. Cindy has extensive experience with patients and their families in helping them navigate the difficult decisions regarding end-of-life-care, pain control, symptom management and advanced directives. She will bring the best in palliative care to our patients along with managerial skills that will allow us to develop needed programs as the Wolfson Palliative Care program grows and expands.”

Kociszewski holds a doctoral degree and a master’s degree in nursing, both from the University of Connecticut. Her doctoral thesis was on family’s experiences of bereavement in the intensive care unit. Kociszewski has an APRN license and is board certified in critical care and pain/palliative care. She has worked at New Britain General since 1996 as an acute care nurse practitioner.

Kociszewski has also served as an adjunct clinical faculty at the University of Connecticut, serves as the acute care core track coordinator and lecturer, and a bereavement support group facilitator. She is actively involved in the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners, American Association of Critical Care Nurses and the Hospice and Palliative Nurses Association.

In addition to patient care and programmatic development, Kociszewski has a passion for teaching and research. She is committed to education of physicians, residents, nurses and others on palliative care, end-of-life care and advance directives. Kociszewski will play an integral role in the palliative care elective offered to residents and medical students at NBGH and the University of Connecticut.

Cynthia Kociszewski is a resident of Thomaston, Connecticut.
