Hospital earns national recognition for employee wellness

New Britain [January 02 2013] - The Hospital of Central Connecticut was one of just 66 organizations nationwide to receive a 2012 Wellness Council of America (WELCOA) Well Workplace Award for quality and excellence in worksite health promotion.

The Hospital of Central Connecticut (HOCC) earned Well Workplace gold status, for developing comprehensive wellness programs that are an integral part of the organization and produce results.

HOCC was recognized for promoting physical activity through worksite walking programs; on-site fitness classes; free employee membership in the hospital fitness center; and discounted memberships for employees to area fitness centers. The hospital was also recognized for promoting good nutrition through education and healthy food options in the cafeterias; and providing employees access to coaching and education, including dietitians, exercise instructors and classes in CPR, first aid and basic and advanced cardiac life support. A key piece of HOCC’s wellness programs is a friendly weight-loss competition that in 2011 drew 394 employees, who collectively lost 2,373 pounds. That contest continued in 2012, challenging employees to maintain or improve weight loss. The hospital is preparing to launch more wellness programs and activities for 2013.

“We are honored to receive this prestigious award, which recognizes the many people at HOCC who created these vital programs and have ensured their success,” said HOCC President and CEO Clarence Silvia. “This WELCOA award is also a tribute to our employees, who have really embraced these programs, worked hard to improve their health, and are enjoying the benefits.”

WELCOA is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the health and well-being of all working Americans. Through its Well Workplace model, the organization has identified seven key benchmarks of success inherent in companies that have built results-oriented workplace wellness programs.
