Hartford HealthCare’s Walk with a Doc reaches milestone with 1,000 event participants

New Britain [July 26 2012] - Hartford HealthCare’s Walk with a Doc program is making great strides, marking 1,000 event participants since starting at The Hospital of Central Connecticut in 2010.

Walk with a Doc hosts free community walks at area parks that are led by doctors and stress the benefits of exercise while providing health tips. In 2012, Walk with a Doc became a Hartford HealthCare systemwide program. It is part of Just Walk! A Walk with a Doc program based in Ohio.

“We are thrilled that this program has attracted so many people from throughout Connecticut since its start as the very first Walk with a Doc program in New England,” says Kimberly Gensicki, senior marketing communications specialist and Walk with a Doc program coordinator. “We are also quite grateful to the many doctors who have supported this program that combines health information and exercise in the great outdoors.”

To date, varied Hartford HealthCare (HHC) entities have hosted 15 Walk with a Doc events in Central Connecticut and Hartford area parks. Of the 67 active programs worldwide that are part of Just Walk, Hartford HealthCare’s Walk with a Doc program is one the largest in terms of overall event participants. HHC averages about 70 walkers per event.

HHC Walk with a Doc event topics have included Good Steps Toward Foot Health, Irregular Heartbeats & Quality of Life, Preventing Lyme Disease, and Sunscreens and Sun Safety. Walks are held monthly April through December, weather permitting.

Thomas Lane, M.D., a Hospital of Central Connecticut internist and Walk with a Doc physician leader, says, “We should all be at least moderately active, for example walking 10,000 steps a day. If we did, our burden of chronic diseases such as coronary heart disease, hypertension, and diabetes mellitus would be far less. We would live longer and richer lives.”

Other Hartford HealthCare entities hosting Walk with a Doc events are Doctors of Central Connecticut, Hartford Hospital, Hartford Medical Group, MidState Medical Center and MidState Medical Group. Program sponsors are Anthem and HPC Foodservice.

Walk with a Doc was started in 2005 by a cardiologist in Ohio. In addition to Walk with a Doc sites in the U.S. are those in Abu Dhabi, Canada, India and Russia. Just Walk! A Walk with a Doc program was named a recipient of the 2012 President’s Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition Community Leadership Award.
