Hospital of Central Connecticut volunteers honored
New Britain [April 24 2012] -
Hundreds of Hospital of Central Connecticut volunteers were honored April 15-21, annual National Healthcare Volunteer Week.
Over the past year, 414 volunteers from the New Britain General and Bradley Memorial campuses combined donated 64,577 hours of service. These include 309 New Britain General campus volunteers, who dedicated 47,777 hours to the hospital; and 123 Bradley Memorial campus volunteers, who donated 16,800 hours.
Volunteers were recognized at hospital luncheons during the week. Several individuals in particular were honored: At Bradley, Eileen Glorioso, Nancy Dayton and Lee Gryniuk of Southington and Pauline Baccaro of Kensington surpassed 1,000 hours of volunteering each. Their names have been added to the Honor Roll.
“Each of these individuals has shown incredible commitment to our patients and the hospital through their volunteer hours,” said Anne Phelan, director of Volunteer Services. “In addition to their regular volunteer hours, they are always willing to help out by volunteering extra hours when needed.”
The New Britain General campus named Jan Blackburn of Kensington as its Volunteer of the Year. She has volunteered at the hospital gift shop since 1984 in various roles, including her current position as gift buyer. She has also served on the hospital’s Auxiliary board, holding various leadership positions, including president.
“Jan has been a vital member of the gift shop team and a source of knowledge for all who work and volunteer there,” Phelan said “Her dedication is exemplified in the number of hours she volunteers each day, not only in the shop, but while at home combing through sales catalogues in search of items for the shop.”
As part of Volunteer week, the hospital added a new recognition level this year, acknowledging several former, long-term volunteers. Among the honorees were Alice Bissoni (18 years), Francis “Chet” Giorgetti (23 years) and William Gadzik (20 years), all of New Britain; Maureen Kinney (17 years) of Wethersfield; Margaret “Peg” Shepard (54 years) of Hartford; and Beverly Veley (24 years) of Kensington.
Overall, volunteer hours donated at both campus equated to nearly $1.4 million – money the hospital can use for patients and capital improvements. Volunteers perform a variety of jobs while at the same time offering valuable moral support to visitors, patients, and staff.
Bradley Memorial campus volunteers Eileen Glorioso and Nancy Dayton of Southington; Pauline Baccaro of Kensington; and Lee Gryniuk of Southington surpassed 1,000 volunteer hours.
