Hospital of Central Connecticut Joslin diabetes education program recognized

New Britain [July 21 2011] - The American Diabetes Association recently awarded continued education recognition of the diabetes self-management program to the Joslin Diabetes Center Affiliate at The Hospital of Central Connecticut.

Recognition, valid for four years, assures that approved patient education programs meet National Standards for Diabetes Self-Management Education Programs. Joslin staff members teach patients with diabetes self-care skills as part of their treatment plans. The Joslin education program at The Hospital of Central Connecticut was originally recognized in 1999.

“We are very pleased that the Joslin Diabetes Center has once again received this recognition for continued education, as it reflects the high quality of our patients’ educational program,” says Karen McAvoy, R.N., M.S.N., CDE, Joslin education coordinator.

Among educational topics covered at Joslin are the diabetes disease process; nutritional management; physical activity; medications; blood glucose monitoring and use of results; foot, skin and dental care; and prevention, detection and treatment of acute and long-term complications. Joslin instructors include certified diabetes educators (registered dietitians and registered nurses) an exercise physiologist and a social worker.

The Joslin Diabetes Center Affiliate at The Hospital of Central Connecticut provides individualized care for people 18 and older with Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes, as well as pregnant women with diabetes. The Affiliate has three offices, at the hospital’s New Britain General and Bradley memorial campuses, and 11 South Road, Farmington. Learn more.
