Hospital nurse, Berlin resident, receives award
New Britain [May 13 2010] -
A Berlin resident received The Hospital of Central Connecticut’s highest nursing honor at a special ceremony May 10.
Linda Cyrulik, R.N., a nurse in the Stroke/Medical unit at the hospital’s New Britain General campus, received the Viola Larson Memorial Award for her clinical expertise, leadership, professional development and compassion and respect for patients and co-workers.
Cyrulik was one of eight nurses nominated by their peers for the award, named for the former vice president of nursing, the late Viola Larson.
Cyrulik, a hospital employee for five years, was described by her peers in their nomination letter as someone who goes above and beyond for her patients, colleagues and the nursing unit. In their letter, Cyrulik’s colleagues recalled how when one of Cyrulik’s patients was diagnosed with cancer, Cyrulik stayed at that patient’s bedside until family members arrived.
Cyrulik has also been known to dance with patients to make them smile, and sit and hold patients’ hands and listen to their concerns.
“Her devotion to her patients is evident in the unique and special relationships she builds,” Cyrulik’s peers wrote.
Cyrulik also takes on a “champion” role when a new initiative is started on the nursing unit, according to her co-workers.
“She personifies a positive attitude and is focused on providing high-quality patient care,” they wrote.
Cyrulik said she was honored to receive the Viola Larson Award.
“The reason I went into nursing is that I feel every patient should be cared for as if they are a part of my family,” she said.
The seven other Viola Larson Award nominees were New Britain General campus R.N.s: Annette Alexander, Emergency Department; Lois Barrett, Special Care Nursery; Jodi Beam, Critical Care; Barbara D’Alessandro, PACU; Paula Evelich, Total Joint & Spine Center; Karen Forino, Medical Oncology; and Maryjane Schultz, Outpatient Department.
