Hospital honors volunteers

New Britain [May 12 2010] - Hundreds of Hospital of Central Connecticut volunteers were honored April 18-24, annual National Healthcare Volunteer Week. Over the past year, 460 volunteers from the New Britain General and Bradley Memorial campuses combined donated 64,478 hours of service.

The volunteers were recognized at hospital luncheons during Volunteer Week. Several individuals in particular were honored: At Bradley Memorial, Martha Chuprevich of Southington, Patricia Cutrali of Plantsville, and Benthe D’Aunno and Jean Kirychuk, both of Southington, surpassed 1,000 hours of volunteering each. Their names have been added to the Honor Roll.

“Each of these individuals has shown incredible commitment to our patients and the hospital through their volunteer hours,” said Anne Phelan, director of Volunteer Services. “In addition to their regular volunteer hours, they are always willing to help out by volunteering extra hours when needed.”

The New Britain General campus named Joan Kelly-Coyle of New Britain Volunteer of the Year. Kelly-Coyle has volunteered for 20 years, mostly with the Wishing Well Gift Shop, acting as a gift buyer for 18 of those years.

Kelly-Coyle is “very active in many civic organizations throughout the area, but it’s the hospital that’s the recipient of most of her generosity,” Phelan said. “She volunteers on average 20 hours per week.” Kelly-Coyle and her fellow gift buyer, Jan Blackburn of Berlin, can both be found in the gift shop every morning where they select, order, unpack and price items to be sold.

During the past year, 328 New Britain General campus volunteers dedicated 45,696 hours to the hospital. The Bradley Memorial campus’ 132 volunteers donated 18,782 hours.
Overall, the volunteered hours have saved the hospital over a million dollars. Volunteers perform a variety of jobs while at the same time offering valuable moral support to visitors, patients, and staff.
