Cancer Support Group will Resume in September
New Britain [September 06 2005] -
The “Living With Cancer Family Support Group” will be resuming Sept. 14 at New Britain General Hospital after a summer hiatus. This “Living with Cancer” group is open to patients at all stages and with all types of cancer, as well as any adult family members and caregivers.
The group will be lead by Diane Defronzo, LCSW, oncology social worker, and the Rev. Will Baumgartner, who provides pastoral care at New Britain General.
In addition to providing the traditional forum for sharing personal insights and experiences, there will be an educational aspect to this group. Various physicians and caregivers will attend meetings to speak on a range of topics. In September, Stephen Grund M.D., director of the George Bray Cancer Center, will attend the first meeting to discuss “tools for living with cancer,” which will include practical information for everyday living.
Other subjects covered in the future will include pain, holiday stress, and resources on the Internet.
“This group is for anyone suffering with cancer, including family members, at any stage of the disease,” said Diane DeFronzo.
The support group will meet on the second Wednesday of each month beginning September 14 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in dining room A at New Britain General Hospital. To register, call Diane DeFronzo at 860-224-5212.
The hospital sponsors other cancer support groups, which are more limited in scope to patients and/or by the type of illness: the Women’s Cancer Connection for women with a cancer diagnosis, and Coping with Prostate Cancer for men. For information about these and any other oncology support services, please call Marcia Anderson at the George Bray Cancer Center at 860-224-5299.
