New Britain General Hospital Dedicates Garden to Donor
New Britain [May 22 2006] -
Bill Balocki is a cancer survivor on a mission. Having successfully battled back against prostate cancer from 1981 to 1988, the Kensington native and retired general contractor is determined to do as much as he can for others.
Balocki has given much of his time and his resources to the George Bray Cancer Center at New Britain General Hospital, the program he credits with helping him beat his cancer. “It’s important to give to help the next person,” he says.
According to David Obedzinski, the hospital’s development director, Balocki is the single largest individual contributor to the hospital’s most recent capital campaign, which included the construction of the American Savings Foundation Radiology Oncology Treatment Center, a program within the George Bray Cancer Center.
Balocki is a crusader in spreading the word about early detection for prostate cancer. “I have my PSA [prostate specific antigen] checked every six to nine months. All men should get a PSA test because prostate cancer is slow growing, and a lot can be done to control it when it’s detected early.”
The hospital held a reception April 25 at the American Savings Foundation Radiation Oncology Treatment Center to recognize Balocki’s contributions to the George Bray Cancer Center and to dedicate the garden outside the Center in Bill’s honor. “Bill is a person who is genuinely interested in both early detection programs and having the latest medical technology available for cancer treatment ,” said Obedzinski. “Naming this garden for Bill is one small way we can say thank you to him for his generous support of the Cancer Center. If his generosity has also encouraged others to support cancer care here in Central Connecticut, I know Bill would be very pleased.”
