Hospital Nurse Receives Excellence Award

New Britain [May 12 2006] - Sharon Telford, RN, of Madison, a nurse and lactation consultant in the perinatal nursing department at New Britain General Hospital, received the Viola Larson Memorial Award May 11 at a special ceremony.

Telford was one of seven New Britain General nurses nominated for the award, which recognizes clinical expertise, leadership, professional development and compassion and respect for patients and co-workers. Named for New Britain General’s former vice president of nursing, the late Viola Larson, it is the hospital’s highest nursing honor.

Telford is a lactation consultant at the hospital and works on-call in the Nursery. In addition to educating mothers and families, she conducts professional development programs for staff and physician residents.

“Sharon is recognized by her staff colleagues, management and other professional colleagues as an outstanding role model who executes her duties and responsibilities with enthusiasm, compassion and collaboration,” Bridget Wheeler, New Britain General Hospital’s vice president of Patient Care Services, said in presenting Sharon with a recognition plaque.

The six other award nominees were: Barbara Amato, Critical Care Unit; Cathy Denuzzio, Critical Care Unit; Ann Flynn, Radiology Unit; Roseann Olsen, Perioperative Area; Linda Piccione, Surgical Telemetry Unit; and Cathy Savage, Pediatric/Gyn Unit.
