Instructions
for preparing for a sleep study

It is important that prior to undergoing your sleep study you prepare appropriately.

Please follow the following guidelines:
  • Do not consume any alcohol within 48 hours of your overnight study.
  • Do not consume any caffeinated beverages after 3:00 p.m. on the day of your sleep study.
  • Do not bring large sums of money or jewelry with you.
  • Please make sure to bring the following items to the hospital on the evening of your test:

    • Personal items needed for you to comfortably prepare for sleep.
    • Your own pillow if it will enhance a good night's sleep.
    • Any medication that you normally take during the hours that you will be in the Sleep Disorders Center.
    • The completed sleep questionnaire and diary that was provided by the center.
    • The hospital garage parking ticket that you will obtain when entering the parking garage.
Please park your car in the parking garage located adjacent to the hospital on Grand Street.

From the garage you must:
  • Enter the hospital through the double glass doors on the lobby level of the garage.
  • Press the intercom buzzer to the right of the second set of glass doors.
  • Announce yourself to the security officer.
  • Enter the hospital lobby and follow signs to the Sleep Center.
  • Once you arrive in the Sleep Disorders Center, you will be directed to a private bedroom that is specially equipped to monitor and record your sleep activity.
The process of collecting physiologic data during sleep is called polysomnography. Devices will be used to painlessly record breathing, heart rate, oxygen levels and brain wave activity during sleep. You will also be under continuous observation through a video camera.

Upon your arrival, please notify the technician if you have to be awakened by a specific time in the morning.

You will be discharged from the Sleep Center no later than 7:00 a.m. on the morning following your test.
