Biopsies

If your mammogram results show areas your doctor wants to explore further, he/she may want to take a tissue sample (biopsy) and examine it under a microscope. The Hospital of Central Connecticut performs a variety of biopsy techniques, including some minimally invasive and non-invasive procedures.

Needle biopsy - A hollow needle is inserted into the targeted area to remove tissue samples. Ultrasound-guided breast core biopsy and aspiration ultrasound use ultrasound to produce pictures of the breast and help guide needle placement.

Surgical biopsy - A traditional surgical procedure to remove a larger tissue sample or whole tumor.

MRI breast studies - A non-invasive technique that produces cross-sectional images of the breast from various angles. Unlike X-ray, MRI does not involve radiation.

Stereotactic biopsy - Uses a computer-guided X-ray to precisely locate tissue and guide the needle for tissue removal.
