Inpatient oncology unit
New Britain General campus: (860) 224-5900 x5621
The Hospital of Central Connecticut's inpatient oncology unit, C-5, provides advanced medical care - and much more.

|
The unit consists of 22 beds, including eight semi-private and 14 private rooms, as well as four designated hospice beds. It's under the direction of a board-certified oncologist and staffed by a multi-disciplinary treatment team of physicians, oncology nurses, advanced practice nurses, pharmacist, dietitian, social worker, care coordinator and pastoral care representative. All work together and with the patient to create the patient's care plan. Our staff has positioned the oncology unit to provide the full spectrum of cancer treatment and services.
Beyond medical care
Recognizing that cancer affects much more than the body - and others besides the patient - C-5's staff is committed to providing mind, body and spirit support to patients, their caretakers and their families. Staff have created programs, activities and special places on the unit designed to provide respite from cancer - taking the patients' and families' focus off the disease.
At weekly music visits, various staff members sing and play guitar or other instruments, inviting patients to join in. Each week, the nurse director and dietitian visit each room, answering patients' and family members' questions. They're accompanied by a "tasteful moments" cart that delivers comfort foods like soup, ice cream sundaes and other favorites.

For holidays and other special occasions, the hospital unit is transformed into a unique "other place" with beautiful decorations and staff in costume.

C-5 visitors and patients' family members are welcome 24 hours a day. The unit has a home-like family suite with a kitchen and bathroom with shower for family members wishing to sleep over. A seasonal roof garden off the family waiting room provides a colorful, welcome refuge for all.
