Treatment

Bone Health and Osteoporosis Center specialists perform a complete evaluation to determine the specific cause(s) of low bone density and safest and most effective therapy for each patient.

For patients with osteopenia (low bone density that is less severe than osteoporosis) or milder osteoporosis, specialists might recommend lifestyle changes alone.

In more serious cases, patients may need medications to help slow bone loss, along with lifestyle changes. Most osteoporosis drugs, including Fosamax, Boniva and Actonel, as well as hormone therapy, work to slow resorption, the breakdown of old bone.

Bone-building medications include teriparatide (Forteo), a parathyroid hormone used to treat men and postmenopausal women with severe osteoporosis.
