Hospitalist benefits
Because they're hospital-based, hospitalists can be at patients' bedsides more quickly if problems arise and are more readily available to communicate with patients and families.
Primary care physicians can avoid traveling back and forth from the hospital. They can focus more on outpatient care at their practices and are regularly updated about their inpatients by the hospitalists.
Admission and discharge forms are faxed to primary care physicians within 24 hours. Discharge summaries are mailed within 24 hours (for patients who will be seen by their PCP within 48 hours) or three to four days for patients who are to see their physicians within one to two weeks.
"I'm very pleased with the Hospitalist Service, particularly the communication. I appreciate being updated when my patient is admitted and discharged, and especially being contacted when there is a significant event during the hospitalization. My outpatients appreciate the fact that I'm more available - I can see them the day they want to be seen."
- Camillo Echanique, MD, Central Connecticut Primary Care
"My patients are very pleased with the care provided by the hospitalists. My work has improved significantly and I can focus more on my outpatients."
- Michael Honor, MD, Grove Hill Medical Center.
