Bipolar mania
(manic episodes)

Bipolar disorder causes dramatic mood swings - from overly "high" and/or irritable to sad and hopeless, and then back again, often with periods of normal mood in between. These mood changes are accompanied by severe changes in energy and behavior. The periods of highs and lows are called episodes of mania and depression.

Signs and symptoms of manic episodes include increased energy, activity, restlessness, excessively euphoric mood, extreme irritability, talking very fast, racing thoughts, and decreased need for sleep.

Bipolar (mania) clinical trials at The Hospital of Central Connecticut

For individuals currently experiencing a manic or mixed episode who are actively receiving lithium or divalproex, the research center is comparing the effectiveness of adding GEODON to placebo. Participants must be 18 to 65 years old and will be assigned to take GEODON or placebo (while continuing their current lithium or divalproex medication regimen) as an outpatient or inpatient for three weeks. Patients will meet with the research staff and a research physician several times during the three week period to monitor their progress.
